What is Freegrown?

A higher standard for food.

Freegrown food is grown and produced without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, sewage sludge, irradiation, or unnecessary synthetic chemical inputs.

It is a standard built around a simple idea: food should be grown as food, not as the end product of a chemical program.

The problem

Modern food labels tell us surprisingly little about how food was actually produced.

A product can satisfy an existing certification while still being produced with substances, practices, processing aids, or exceptions that many consumers would rather avoid. Long ingredient lists and complicated regulatory definitions make it difficult to answer a very basic question: How was this food actually grown?

Consumers who want food produced with fewer interventions are left researching individual farms, chemicals, feed practices, processing methods, and competing labels.

Freegrown exists to make that answer simpler.

The solution

One recognizable mark. One clear standard.

Freegrown establishes production standards covering the entire path from the land and agricultural inputs through growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and sale.

Certification isn't based simply on what is absent from the ingredient label. It looks at how the food was produced.

Farms and producers using the Freegrown mark must meet the applicable Freegrown standards and maintain the practices required for certification.

The result is a certification consumers can recognize without having to investigate every product for themselves.

What is Freegrown food?

Freegrown food begins with agricultural, animal, or naturally occurring materials produced without:

• Synthetic pesticides and herbicides
• Synthetic fertilizers
• Genetically modified organisms
• Sewage sludge
• Irradiation
• Unnecessary synthetic chemical inputs

Freegrown standards continue beyond the field. Processing, handling, packaging, storage, and other stages of production must also meet requirements intended to preserve the natural integrity of the food.

Freegrown isn't a description a producer gives itself. It is a certification.

When you see the Freegrown mark, it means the producer has agreed to follow a defined standard governing how that product is grown and made.

Why Freegrown?

For generations, food was produced primarily through soil, sunlight, water, animals, plants, skill, and time.

Agriculture has gained extraordinary capabilities since then, but every new intervention does not necessarily belong in the production of our food.

Freegrown provides a place for farmers and producers who choose another path: produce good food while using fewer artificial interventions between nature and the finished product.

And it gives consumers an easy way to find them.
